Great Danes are known for being charming and affectionate dogs despite their size. However, as with the case with any other dog, without proper training, certain behavioral issues are bound to arise. But with enough consistency and patience, Great Dane training need not be a daunting task. It may take some time, but bear in mind that there aren’t any behavioral problems that can’t be corrected.

The most important aspect of Great Dane training is socializing your dog.

Great Danes love being around other people. In fact, they crave the attention and affection. But because of their size, it is quite common for most families to simply arrange a space for them outdoors and leave them out in the yard. If this is the case, depriving them of attention and affection can cause them to develop certain behavioral problems. Instead of their natural pleasant disposition, they may tend to appear aloof and distant.

The most common ways Great Danes cope with anxiety are by excessive digging, whining, barking, and growling. Here are a few pointers for efficient Great Dane training:

]]>

1. Digging

Digging is part of a dog’s general nature. However, it does become a problem if your Great Dane starts digging in several places in your yard. You don’t want your dog destroying your beautiful landscape do you? To solve this, designate one area where your dog can dig. A common trick most people use is burying its feces where you don’t want it to dig and burying a dog bone in an area where it can dig. Digging up its own feces will discourage it from ever touching that area.

2. Whining and barking

Whining or barking is a way for dogs to get attention. Our natural tendency is to come to our dog’s aid and see what is wrong. But once we see that there’s nothing really wrong, and that it just wants our attention, try not to encourage this behavior. Wait until it‘s calm before you approach it. Immediately giving in to its call for attention is like spoiling a child. Let your dog know that there is a proper way to get what it wants.

3. Growling

If a Great Dane has not been properly socialized, its tendency will be to growl at strangers. This can be quite terrifying considering its size. Just keep in mind that Great Danes are not aggressive dogs. Make it a point to introduce them to other people and dogs. Growling can either be a sign of fear or it may simply be a defense mechanism. Once you let them know that it’s completely safe to have company, your dog will definitely come around.

Great Dane training is simple like other dog training.  It’s always good to address behavioral problems as early as possible. Lucky for you, it is in their genetic make-up to be loving and friendly companions. Do your part and help your dog prove to others what an endearing pet it really is.

Isn't it amazing to have

Great Danes

in your life? I love

Great Danes...

Owning Great Danes is one of the most challenging tasks a dog lover may probably encounter. Wonder why I said challenging? It is simply because this breed may grow into a wonderful giant dog in a matter of months. So who wouldn't think that taking care of a giant dog isn't challenging?

But despite the size issue, a lot of people are fond of their Great Danes and a lot more are eager to have one under their care. For me, no matter how tall or large a Dane will grow, it doesn't really matter. After all, size alone isn't the only basis of the excellence of a dog. I love Great Danes because of their gentle temperament and friendly nature. They are kind, sweet and affectionate. Children are safe with this breed for they are playful and love to be around people. We have a Harlequin and

Mantle Great Danes.

Harlequin named Zaffer with height 37" and weight 90kg and Mantle named Razia with height 35" and weight 72kg.
The more I spend time and get to know this breed, the more I feel such admiration towards them. This breed that draws attention of the crowd is not hard to groom at all. Bathing is somewhat a challenge given this breed's size in addition to prior-to-bathing-fuss but the need to bath can be avoided by daily grooming. Daily grooming only includes combing and brushing with a firm bristle brush. Dry shampoo can be used when necessary and the nails must be kept trimmed.

I love it when I look at their round and dark eyes. It seems that their intelligence can be seen right through their eyes. With Great Danes around, I did not feel alone or helpless. I felt like someone is there to listen to all my anguish or to just sit quietly with me when I did not feel like talking. And I knew that someone brave and dependable is ready to protect me in times of danger. I miss my Great Danes; they are now in my home back in India.

A Great Dane may not stay with me for a long time, but I don't worry about that. The happiness and love this breed offers are enough to treasure them for a lifetime. I really love them so much..

What Makes YouTube Such a Great Medium?

People have been glued to the television since the year it came out. Yet, its authority has quickly been usurped by the emergence of on-demand "online television," found at sites like "YouTube". Here, one can type virtually anything into the search engine and get immediate results, whether it's a movie preview for the new Batman, music clips from a concert, funny videos from Comedy Central, a classic movie like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" or an old episode of Star Trek.

There is no shortage of funny videos on YouTube! One can find all of the best sketch comedy skits from shows like Saturday Night Live, In Living Color and MadTV, as well as cartoon comedies, like South Park, Family Guy and the Simpsons. Additionally, free clips of stand-up comedians like George Carlin, Greg Giraldo, Daniel Tosh and Dane Cook can be viewed.

Political junkies can watch Karl Rove singing and dancing like an MC at the White House Correspondents Dinner, they can watch some of the JibJab spoof videos, the infamous "Dean Scream" that cost Howard Dean his candidacy, or a video about McCain set to "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" theme song.

Music videos are popular on "YouTube" as well. What makes YouTube such a great medium is that even low-budget, unsigned bands can promote their music, without having to deal with the politics involved in gaining access to traditional music channels, like MTV or VH-1. Unknowns can attract attention if they're good. For example, singer Terra Naomi signed a deal with Island Records and Esmee Denters toured with Justin Timberlake following their widespread YouTube popularity. In addition to finding new music clips, one can also look up oldies-but-goodies, like MC Hammer's "Too Legit To Quit," Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" or "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits.

Hollywood talent scout Frederick Levy says that it takes talent and an extroverted personality to become a "YouTube" phenomenon. "There are a lot of people who aren't very likable, yet are very popular on YouTube," Levy admits. "Take Chris Crocker, who was behind the "Leave Britney Alone!" video. I don't think he's the most likable person on the net, as he is a little eccentric and crazy.

Likable people are watched a lot, but so are eccentric people." The site h

Great Dane Training – Leadership

Great Dane training requires leadership.

Especially true while walking on a leash but still important while off leash.
Informal training will help reinforce that you are in control - leaders are better respected if they are in complete control.

Try new commands in a relaxed environment and if your dog doesn't understand what you are asking show him what you want.  When he finally complies to your satisfaction praise him.  If it didn't work out but he did try to make you happy, praise him.  It doesn't have to be perfect.  Great Dane training is much easier if the dog relates working with you to having fun.

]]>

If your Great Dane sees you as their leader they will stand up for you, not lean against youJ

If you have a tendency to overreact Great Dane training can be challenging.
When their people get in a frenzy, these dogs will react.  Fight or flight.  (More often    flight)

The Great Dane breed standard as set out by the AKC states:

"A Great Dane must be spirited, courageous, never timid; always friendly and depend-able".

If your dog is confined to a certain area and rarely exposed to the wonderful sights and sounds of the outside world, you could have a lackluster, cowardly, unreliable dog.

Taking your Great Dane out on frequent and varied excursions will make you an interesting person, from the dogs point of view.

Interest=Attentiveness

While you are out with your dog on a leash it is important to own the leadership role.

Don't fret over what might go wrong, the dog will see it in your body language and things often will go wrong.

They pick up on vibes but are not mind readers.  Show your dog what you want.  Now that you are the leader your Great Dane will follow you to the best of their ability.

Great Scott! Adam seals it in Singapore

Many people questioned why Adam Scott was made favourite to win the Singapore Open this weekend.

Understandable, as the Australian has only one once this year (Mizuno MX-1000 Irons) - and that was preceded by a two-year title drought.

But the 30-year-old is very popular in Asia and has a good record on the continent, having already claimed this title in 2005 and 2006.

"It's a new experience for me as it's the first time (Mizuno MP-68 Irons) I've won three times," he said.

"I'm very proud to win the National Open and these are the kind of events that you dream of winning when you're growing up as a kid.

"It's been a long week and it was a bit of a grind this morning. It's not an easy back nine to come out and play and I didn't make it look that easy either, so I'm just happy to be done and be the (Mizuno MP-52 Irons) winner again."

]]>

Scott faced stiff competition at the Sentosa Golf Club as defending champion Ian Poulter seemed hell-bent on retaining his title before heavy rain forced the tournament into a Monday finish.

The Adelaide man led by three shots with ten to go when play resumed on Monday, but tried his best to throw it away with bogeys at ten and 14.

"I haven't been putting my best lately and the demons starting creeping in a little bit on the back nine," continued the former world number three.

"But fortunately I squashed them and made a good putt on 15. That gave me a little buffer and calmed me down for the last three.

"The 15th was a huge hole. I hit the ball beautifully and I hit every shot where I needed it to be."

And just like Wimbledon in 2001, the overnight delay proved costly for England's best hope, and Poulter looked a different man as he dropped a shot at the 12th before (Mizuno Mx-200 Irons) double-bogeying the par-4 15th to finish six shots off the pace.

Dane Anders Hansen (68), Graeme McDowell (70) and Swede Rikard Karlberg (67) all leapfrogged Poulter, who finished fifth, on the back nine.

The win moves Scott from 41st to 20th in the world rankings, while McDowell slides up a spot to ninth, dropping good friend Rory McDowell to tenth.

Great Danes

The Great Dane is a big dog that often has no concept of his size. One family fashioned a cowbell on their Dane so they could hear him coming. There was not an aggressive bone in him but when he galloped full bore towards you he'd brush past enough to knock you sideways if you weren't ready for him!

This is a giant of a breed with a gentle heart. They're a clown that is the inspiration for Marmaduke cartoons with the impression of power in television and movies. Danes have been immortalized by the likes of Scooby-Doo and in movies such as The Patriot, The Swiss Family Robinson, Good Boy! Pluto and Goofy are said to be inspired by Great Danes.

They're dignified yet can be goofy. Their very size demands early training and discipline to be calm, loving adults. Gibson, a harlequin, is 42.2 inches and 170 pounds - when he stands on his hind legs he's seven feet tall!

The Great Dane is noble and elegant and a true giant of a dog. They have a history dating back over 400 years where they were used for boar hunting. A dog resembling a Dane was found in materials dated to 1211 B.C. The Great Dane is believed to trace to the Irish Wolfhound and English Mastiff as parent breeds, for the purpose hunting of a fast, powerful and savage foe. Along with hunting for boar they were also used for deer hunting.

By the breed standard they are powerful and smooth muscled with a spirited attitude. The males must be over 30 inches and over 32 inches are preferred as long as he is balanced. This leaves a dog that can be 150 pounds without being fat! Counters are head high to them. A smooth bbut thick coat that shines with good care is ideal.

The Danes come in several colors including brindle, fawn with black mask, blue, black, harlequin and mantle. A harlequin is a pinto pattern of black and white while the mantle is "collie marked" in black and white. This is a breed that strides out level and powerful and is friendly. They shouldn't ever be timid or aggressive. The ears may be cropped or uncropped.

Their giant size means massive growth as puppies that is a challenge to feed. Too fast growth can cause problems with joints while too slow isn't good either. Several health issues can face the breed and are serious enough to warrant attention.

]]>

The Great Dane is the #1 breed in statistics for bloat, which is the leading killer of this beautiful breed. It is imperative to feed several small meals per day and restrict exercise immediately afterwards to keep the stomach from filling and twisting. If a twist occurs it causes the dog excruciating pain and he will die in hours without surgical care. This cannot be stressed enough - prevention is much much better than dealing with a dog in crisis. Preventing these giants from drinking large amounts of water is another recommended tip.

Hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism also affect Danes as well as cardiomyopathy. All three of these are genetic and can be tested for to eliminate breeding dogs that will pass the disease on. Cataracts can affect the breed as well as bone cancer and lymphoma. Wobblers or CVI is another serious disorder that results from pressure on the spinal cord in the neck area. Dogs appear unsteady or 'drunk'. HOD - hypertrophic osteodystrophy is a painful disorder resulting from rapid growth. Panosteitis is another disorder that can cause lameness during the growth phase.

The Great Dane needs a fenced yard but keep them away from landscaping as they are apt to rearrange it! Due to their size they should not be left alone with children. Although Danes are not mean dogs their size and playfulness can injure children as well as smaller pets. They are people orientated but do need consistent training from puppyhood! Their size alone deters many problems and they shouldn't be taught to be aggressive.

This is a breed that can be expensive due to the large size and everything from beds to dishes is bigger! If socialized they love people with one Dane owner putting a bell on his dog so there was warning of him coming. The dog was not a bit mean but his size brushing past people could knock you down!

This is a breed that can live 8-10 years and more than one child has climbed up on a Dane to ride them as a small horse. Most dogs take such things in stride but again - the size if playing or wrestling can hurt a small child without ever intending to.

A good diet is critical for these dogs not only in quantity but quality. This is an active breed that loves to run but should do so only in controlled situations. They are not typically barkers without a reason to bark.

When taking on a Dane remember that many people are afraid of large dogs. Be responsible enough to keep your Dane home where he belongs. Fawn Danes in particular are at the mercy of unethical hunters in the fall and more than one Dane has lost his life simply wandering in the woods. In urban areas the dangers can be even higher. Don't take the chance of losing a great dog for lack of a fence, and don't rely on the invisible fences.

Training is not an option but a requirement! They MUST know their place in the pack order (and always below humans!) and firm, consistent handling is key to establishing this. Allowing a Great Dane to dominate a household means someone will get hurt or killed sooner or later, a situation in which both people and dogs lose. It is also one which is preventable. The Great Dane is an intelligent dog that wants to learn and wants to do the right thing - it is up to his owners to teach him what that is!

As of 2007 the world's tallest dog is a Great Dane. The Great Dane is the official dog of Pennsylvania and the team mascot at the University of Albany. A Great Dane has been a member of the South African Navy and the breed is prominent in Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin.

Among the fans of the Great Dane is Burt Ward, famous as "Robin" in the Batman series of the 1960s. He and his wife have a home that gives Great Danes a second chance and 3,000 Danes have found homes since 1994.

The Great Dane is a big dog that is a great dog in the right hands with the right handling. They need a home that is willing to be firm enough to teach manners and discipline but compassionate enough to bolster them and help them be the bold, outgoing adult they are capable of being.

The Dane will give you his heart and his life if need be. Make sure your time with him is worth that kind of devotion!

Have A Great Dane? The Importance of Training a Great Dane

Are you thinking of adopting a Great Dane? Or maybe you are already a Great Dane owner.

Well, regardless of whether you are already a Great Dane owner or has the intention to keep one, there is something extremely important that you should definitely take note of.

First of all, Great Dane is a very big dog. A fully grown Great Dane can look like a horse. Alright, it may be a bit exaggerating and a Great Dane may not be as large as a horse. But it is certainly big enough to cause you a lot of problems.

]]>

Although a Great Dane is not known for being aggressive, its sheer size means it can pose a lot of dangers to yourself as well as members of the public if it is not properly trained.

Jumping may not be a very big problem for small dogs, though it can still be an annoyance that should be corrected. However, imagine a fully grown Great Dane jumping on you. Imagine how much damage it could have caused you. You can possibly be hurt.

And what happens if it jumps on elderly folks or even children. Take note that when a Great Dane is jumping on people, its intention may not be to cause injuries. It is simply trying to be friendly. But because of its huge size, it can easily hurt people without knowing it.

That is why it is so important to start training your Great Dane when it is still a puppy, especially on the part of jumping.
