Pennsylvania’s AKC Health insurance for Pets

[wprebay kw="great+dane+clubs" num="7" ebcat="-1"]

Throughout history most of a veterinarian's clientele was farm livestock (large animals). Dogs, cats and other household pets made up such a small amount of their daily business there was very little reason to study up on it. Even the beloved European veterinarian, James Herriott, counted on the Yorkshire farmers for a majority of his country clinics business. In 1884 that began to change when the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary school opened the United States very first clinic specializing in the veterinary needs of dogs.  In 2001 the United States of America had over 28,000 veterinarians who specialize in small animals.

It is fitting that Pennsylvania opened the very first vet clinic that specialized in the veterinary needs of dogs, the state has had a long running bond with the canine population, starting with the states founders, William Penn's, Great Dane. A portrait of this Great Dane standing beside his master can be seen hanging in the governor's reception room of the governor's mansion in Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania considers the Great Dane the state dog. Owners of Great Dane's appreciate the breed's faithfulness, intelligence, beauty, courage, and tolerance. Great Danes stand approximately 30-34 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 120-200 pounds, people who have Great Danes believe that the larger the dog the better. Because of their large size Great Danes are not an exceptionally long lived dog; their bodies simply aren't designed to last very long. Many Great Danes suffer from heart problems, bloat, twisted intestines, and tail injuries. Some Great Danes have been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Great Dane owners are not advised to take their Great Danes jogging until the puppy is at least one year old. Dogs featured in ancient Greek art work bear a strong resemblance to today's Great Dane. German hunters were especially impressed with the dog's ability at hunting bears and wild boars and bred the best great Danes to the best Greyhounds which helped create a leaner more agile breed.

Dog owners in the state of Pennsylvania are more then eligible to purchase pet health insurance for their dogs from the American Kennel Club. The American Kennel club estimates that the average pet owner who purchases an essential pet health care insurance plan (the essential health insurance plan is the name of the AKC's lowest health insurance policy) through them will only pay approximately sixty-eight cents per day. Pet owners who purchase pet health insurance through the American Kennel Club have four different types of health insurance plans to choose from. The American Kennel Club Insurance company is happy to include cats into its health care insurance program. The American Kennel club is so confident that pet owners will love the benefits of purchasing pet health care insurance through them that they proudly offer owners the opportunity to test drive their insurance policy free for sixty days. Pet owners who insure their pets with pet health care insurance offered by the American Kennel Club are allowed to decide if they would like to receive a monthly statement in the mail or if they would rather pay for the an entire years worth of insurance in one lump sum and then not have to worry about it for twelve months.

Weight Loss and Health tips part 1

Staying in good shape for the rest of our life sounds like everybody's ideal dream. Staying slim is not just something nice but is a necessity if we want a healthy long life and our actions about it, play a very important role.

My first  Weight loss and Health tip is based on one of the 7 natural laws of the universe: The law of cause and effect. There are two things in life from which you can never escape: Action and Reaction, good or bad is up to you.

Being overweight is not only because you eat more but also because you move less; When you are just sitting and watching TV for hours, your body is storing the excess of energy of the food you ate today because you are not burning it off. That is a reaction to an action you took.

More than often you use the car to do the tiniest distance, which you could have easily done on foot; as a result you do not consume many calories, for sure less than you eat. That is another action that brings a bad reaction(to your body).

]]>

Now slowly you start to understand what I am talking about.

But what would happen if you could replace these actions with other better ones? The answer is good reactions, and good reactions bring good results: Weight Loss, Better Health.

Its easy to do these changes, you just have to stand up from your sofa or your chair and start moving, here are some ideas:

Use a bicycle for near distances; it will be great for your health and fitness and for the environment too(less pollution)!!Or if you hate bicycles, just walk this distance.

How many hours do you spend every day in front of your TV?3, 4, 5 or even more?

I am sure you can do something, more useful. Sitting too much at home also makes you think more of the food. Instead start reduce this time: if you have a dog take him an extra round,he will be very excited and you will burn many calories as well.

If you have a garden is easy;there is always something to do:you can add  some new flowers, or cut the grass or paint that old fence.

You can take an easy walk and go check some nearby shop vitrines, maybe you will find something interesting. If you have a garage in your house, go and tidy it a little bit.

There is always something you can do, just use your imagination. Soon after start doing these kind of actions, you will start to see the results:better mood (more energy, more happiness) and in your body (more slim and toned).

Six Best Dog Care, Feeding And Maintenance Basics

[wprebay kw="dog+care+and+training" num="6" ebcat="-1"]

Feeding your dog is as important ,if not more important than training your dog.  His well-being depends primarily on the dog care and feeding routine you give him.

Like you, doggy requires a balanced nutrient feed that will give required energy and assist in general animal metabolism and growth.
These include water, proteins (amino-acids), vitamins. Fats, carbohydrate, minerals. All these are required in good amounts in your dogs feed

Do you know that dog's care and feeding should not be a chance thing. Best dog food and feeding practice includes all of the following:

1. A Point to Note.

Your dogs' diet must be planned and so is the feeding schedule. Your schedule should take factors as age, weight and his physical condition into consideration.  For grown-ups split food  ration into two meals spaced 10-12 hours apart.

]]>

The younger pups, are usually permanently on a feeding binge. They should be allow to feed more frequently. At they  grow reduce feeding to 3-4 times a day. They will get accustomed to this program  until they mature.

2. Do Not Over-Feed

Especially when we train from puppy stage, we should avoid overfeeding.
It could lead to health problems. Dogs usually grow at certain amounts depending on his specie's maturity size. Good feeding entails regular feeding that takes care of his need.
Avoid feeding at every beck and call, or he may sense that every time is feeding time. This way, monitoring your dog's health and feeding habits well, when feeding is not planned would be impossible.

3. Determine the best feeding program for your  dog.

This is determined by three factors: 1. The age of your pet 2. Its feeding habit 3. Its circumstances. - whether its weaning or recuperating.  Portion-control feeding where measured portions are served twice daily is recommended if he is more than six months and healthy. Determine the right quantities, especially when his feeding is normal.

4. When Dogs are not feeding well

It  may be necessary to find out why. It may be general boredom or he requires some change of environment. You can change to his favorite and serve at other areas around the house. Try some light exercises and take him for  short walk prior to feeding. Doing something different is exciting to him. Try out some tricks and you will find one that helps most.

5. How  to Serve Him

Food should never be served boiling hot. It should be at room temperature.  Its best to serve with a dog feeder or a single bowl. A separate bowl should contain clean water. It provides the necessary body moisture for your dog.  A clean environment keeps your dog healthy and full of vim.

6. See  Your Vet

You may decide to feed your dog from wholly home-prepared feed or your give  a mixture with some amounts of high quality foods. Whatever is your choice , you should always consult with his Vet to determine the best feeding schedule and types of foods that is best for him.

Pet Insurance for the Great Dane

Great Danes originated in Germany and were used as guardians and for hunting large animals like wild boar for food. They became popular with the upper class because of their powerful yet sleek appearance. There is some mystery behind the name of the Great Dane, since the breed is German and not Danish, but there is no denying the breed is ‘great'. The breed came to America in the 1880s where they ended up becoming a great family pet for many households.

Despite their history of being guardians and protectors and despite their size and power, Great Danes are known to be gentle, loving, easygoing, and sensitive dogs. They are friendly with other pets and people and are eager to please, so they are easily trained. However, they may unintentionally injure young children or small pets because of their size, so it's important to keep that in mind when deciding if one is right for a certain family dynamic.

]]>

They don't need a ton of exercise to stay healthy and a moderate walk daily would suffice. Their size does require that they have room to stretch out when sleeping and these dogs would not be a good match for an apartment dweller.

There is not much upkeep required for their coat, which is smooth and short and can come in brindle, black and fawn, blue, or black. But it's important to note that these dogs tend to drool and many Great Dane owners are known for carrying around drool rags to keep their dogs clean.

The most common health concerns associated with this breed are gastric torsion, a life-threatening condition where the stomach twists over itself; hip dysplasia, the malformation of the hip joints; cardiomyopathy, an encompassing term for heart problems; elbow dysplasia, the malformation of the elbow joint; and bone cancer. Pet insurance is one way to offset the high costs associated with treating all of these conditions, and more. With pet insurance pet owners can make decisions based solely on what is best for their pet, not how much the treatment costs.

Great Danes stand between 28 inches and 35 inches tall and weigh between 130 pounds and 150 pounds. They live to be between seven and ten years old.

What Your Dog is Trying to Tell You

If you are a die-hard doggie fanatic, you've probably watched pup based TV shows such as National Geographic's Dog Whisperer on any given Friday night. While we average Joe pet lovers may not have the training or credentials to land us our own primetime series, we come equipped with all the inklings of a dog whisper in the making.

Want to know what your own dog is saying? Read on to decode each behavior, woof and ruff all without ever turning on the boob tube.

The Shoe Nibbler
Ok. This one is for all your femme fatales with poodles who haven't quite figured out that Jimmy Choos are not chew toys. If you've got a young pup, chewing . . . unfortunately, is just a simple step in growing up. You know, much like your own young destructive phase. Yea. You know the one. Remember those years your room was so messy you could have hidden a few cars or dead bodies on the floor and no one would have noticed?
However, if you have an old dog and the nibbling is new it could be a cry for attention. Has there been a change in your life? A new baby in the mix? A new beau who takes Fluffy's side of the sofa? Then chances are this little shoe nibbler is saying one of two things "Show me some attention!" or "Get off my sofa or else, bucko!"

The Leash Leader

]]>

Does your Great Dane drag you down the street? Feel like you're the one on the leash? When your dog takes off without you while out for a walk he's not just acting up, he's trying to tell you something. This kind of behavior says, "Our relationship is off balance." and "I'm the leader of the pack."

Wild dogs by nature run in packs with one leader. Your unruly Chow Chow has that same DNA programmed into his being. You are the leader of the pack and when your dog takes you for a leash ride, it's time to listen up and take your place as the head "pup."

The Stranger Bark
Does your furry friend growl like mad at the mailman or eagerly chase the wheels of every car that passes your place? If these animal antics are familiar to your family, than your pup is telling outsiders to be warned. "This is my family! Stay away!"

While many dogs will bark at any stranger that comes too close for comfort, some otherwise friendly dogs are an uncanny judge of character. In fact there are many true life stories that tell the tale of dogs who instinctively barked at their owners assailant days before the actual attack - some in passing on the street, others while hearing a knock at the door. When a dog is truly uneasy and weary of someone around you, he will place himself between you and that person. When you aren't sure if you're dog is showing out or going into protective mode the best thing to do is assume that it's the latter and get away as quickly as possible. It might just save your life.

The Multi-Personality Pooch
Is your puppy well behaved around strangers but behind closed doors tries to gnaw your hands or ankles? Just like us, puppies have a certain comfort level. For instance, while you might not wear sweat pants in front of your boss, you certainly don't mind vegging out the sofa with your sister.
If you have a multi-personality pooch often times his behavior is saying "I can be myself around you." And while the teeth marks on your leg might not be flattering, what they are trying to say is.

When it comes to understanding your pooch, the important thing to remember is that just like a hand-stitched quilt, no two pups are alike. The longer you know your pooch the easier it becomes to figure out what each of his moods, "voices" and actions mean. However, if you notice unusual behavior in your dog, don't be afraid to ask questions. Talk to your veterinarian. They will help you decode their unusual behaviors and get them back to feeling tail wagging wonderful in no time at all.

Britesmile Teeth Whitening – Ever Think About Your Dog’s Teeth?

[wprebay kw="dog+care+teeth" num="4" ebcat="-1"]

Do you want a brighter whiter smile?. click here now >> for a great teeth whitening solution >>

I do not know about you but how often do you think about your dog's teeth? If you are like me not too often.

A dog's teeth should be routinely examined at least once a year by your vet and you as the pet parent should take a peek inside your dog's mouth at least every few months.

Why?

Well believe it or not dog's can fracture their teeth chewing on any number of substances. A build up of plaque can easily hide an already fractured tooth or one-day you could find your dog's face severely swollen and a whopping dental treatment bill in your hands.

It matters not what breed or size your dog is teeth and what a dog does with them all share a common problem chewing on various things from rocks to hard bones.

The most common culprit is the 'nylon dog bone.' These bones are sold with the idea that they are very beneficial to a dog's dental health and that may be so. However they are also the cause of most dental fractures according to many vets due to their hardness and the way dogs chew.

]]>

It seems young dogs and older dogs are the ones most susceptible to fractures from chewing on these bones.

What kind of teeth do dogs have and what ones are the most important?

Puppies are born toothless and within three to six weeks their baby or 'deciduous' teeth will begin to poke through and soon they have 28 teeth.

By the time they are seven to ten months old these teeth will begin to fall out one by one.

Within a year or so they will have 20 top teeth and 22 bottom teeth to replace their baby teeth.

Dogs have four types of teeth in their mouths does not matter what breed or size they are all dogs have the same teeth.

The incisors are located in the front of the mouth and are known as the 'nipping teeth' there are 3 upper and 3 lower teeth.

The canines or the fangs are next and there are 2 upper and 2 lower teeth. These are the 'big' ones and are used grasping and puncturing things.

Next are the gripping teeth known as the premolars. They are behind the canines and there are 4 upper and 4 lower ones

Last but not least are the 'grinders' 2 upper and 3 lower teeth.

The two most powerful teeth in a dog's mouth are the 4th upper premolar and the 1st lower molar they are known as the carnassial teeth.

These teeth overlap when a dog's mouth is closed and can grip and chew an object with a power we can not imagine.

The teeth that are the most important to save for a dog are the fang and carnassial teeth.

What options are available for your dog should it need dental work?

The only treatments currently available are extractions (pulling the tooth) and root canals.

Both require the dog to be sedated.
Of the two choices a root canal is quicker and less painful for the dog.

Extractions can lead to many problems especially if the first molars or canines are affected. Extractions can cause postoperative pain and require pain medication. The dog has to be kept fairly quiet for a week or so and will have stitches that need to heal.

Root canals seal the tooth and generally a dog needs to take an antibiotic for a week or ten days after and will literally suffer no pain.

Should you dog have a problem with any of its teeth I suggest a quick trip to your vet to get the problem taken care of.

Prompt attention can save you and your dog a lot of time pain and suffering.
