While we average Joe pet lovers may not have the training or credentials to land us our own primetime series, we come equipped with all the inklings of a dog whisper in the making.

The Shoe Nibbler
Ok. This one is for all your femme fatales with poodles who haven't quite figured out that Jimmy Choos are not chew toys. If you've got a young pup, chewing . . . unfortunately, is just a simple step in growing up. You know, much like your own young destructive phase. Yea. You know the one. Remember those years your room was so messy you could have hidden a few cars or dead bodies on the floor and no one would have noticed?
However, if you have an old dog and the nibbling is new it could be a cry for attention. Has there been a change in your life? A new baby in the mix? A new beau who takes Fluffy's side of the sofa? Then chances are this little shoe nibbler is saying one of two things "Show me some attention!" or "Get off my sofa or else, bucko!"

The Leash Leader

Does your Great Dane drag you down the street? Feel like you're the one on the leash? When your dog takes off without you while out for a walk he's not just acting up, he's trying to tell you something. This kind of behavior says, "Our relationship is off balance." and "I'm the leader of the pack."

Wild dogs by nature run in packs with one leader. Your unruly Chow Chow has that same DNA programmed into his being. You are the leader of the pack and when your dog takes you for a leash ride, it's time to listen up and take your place as the head "pup."

The Stranger Bark
Does your furry friend growl like mad at the mailman or eagerly chase the wheels of every car that passes your place? If these animal antics are familiar to your family, than your pup is telling outsiders to be warned. "This is my family! Stay away!"

While many dogs will bark at any stranger that comes too close for comfort, some otherwise friendly dogs are an uncanny judge of character. In fact there are many true life stories that tell the tale of dogs who instinctively barked at their owners assailant days before the actual attack - some in passing on the street, others while hearing a knock at the door. When a dog is truly uneasy and weary of someone around you, he will place himself between you and that person. When you aren't sure if you're dog is showing out or going into protective mode the best thing to do is assume that it's the latter and get away as quickly as possible. It might just save your life.

The Multi-Personality Pooch
Is your puppy well behaved around strangers but behind closed doors tries to gnaw your hands or ankles? Just like us, puppies have a certain comfort level. For instance, while you might not wear sweat pants in front of your boss, you certainly don't mind vegging out the sofa with your sister.
If you have a multi-personality pooch often times his behavior is saying "I can be myself around you." And while the teeth marks on your leg might not be flattering, what they are trying to say is.

When it comes to understanding your pooch, the important thing to remember is that just like a hand-stitched quilt, no two pups are alike. The longer you know your pooch the easier it becomes to figure out what each of his moods, "voices" and actions mean. However, if you notice unusual behavior in your dog, don't be afraid to ask questions. Talk to your veterinarian. The symptoms of pain and discomfort experienced by a dog can give us many clues about the possible underlying illness. Dog Bowl Aggression, and the Wonderful Resource We Waste Everyday!!!

I got an email from an old friend of mine about their young Great Dane pup who was showing some nasty habits around the food bowl. Turns out this dog would growl and snarl around the food bowl, and Tracy (friend) has three small kids! This story plays out every day throughout America, and whether you have kids or your dog is a Great Dane or even a Pekinese, it is a very serious issue! No one wants to deal with a social deviant with four legs!

What if I told you that in many cases we cause this behavior ourselves! The ironic part is that we create the problem each and every time we get or fill Rover's bowl with food! This topic will require several blogs, but hold on and let's get started by talking about how we feed our dogs and what can be done about that food bowl or resource guarding grumpiness!

First off, let's take a look at how a dog in the wild would eat, and compare it to how we, as humans, usually feed our dogs. In the wild, a dog left to its own devices would spend roughly 18 hours each day looking for and eating its food. They are scavengers, hunters and opportunists. Since food is the most important resource they have, they would spend the majority of their time getting it. Now let's look at how we as humans do it! It's 7:30am and you are running late; the kids need to be at school by 8:10; you have a conference call at 8:30; and…oh crap! Fido hasn't been fed yet! You throw some food into a bowl and slap it on the ground, and Fido goes to it! 60 seconds later, Fido is done eating so you rush out the door and Fido is left to figure out what to do for the next 23 hours and 59 minutes!!!! If you are a "really good" dog owner you might repeat this process 2 to 3 times a day, using up to 2 or 3 total minutes of Fido's day relating to eating, but really, what does he do with his free time till his next meal?

How about…

·         Eating the couch or some other fun piece of the house?
·         Barking incessantly at squirrels (garnering complaints from the neighbors)?
·         Peeing and pooping all over the house?
·         Looking for, destroying and/or eating, underwear, socks, shoes or any other item that smells like their owner?

 

Do any of these sound familiar???

This list could go on forever, but suffice it to say that the way we feed our dogs leaves them with a lot of "free" time (see blog posts Why do dogs bark & what can be done about it? Parts 1 & 2).  And as my mom always said "Idle hands are the devils play things"!!!

For the time being let's get back to food bowl aggression, and how solving that behavior will circle back to fixing these other problem behaviors! In fact, by the end of this series of blogs, you will hopefully realize that by feeding differently you can positively affect all problem behaviors…with just a couple of changes in your dealings with Fido.

Okay, why would my loving dog all of a sudden become a social deviant around their food bowl? Well the simple answer is…we are taking a basic survival ritual (hunting, finding and finally eating their food) and making it last roughly a minute! Not to mention we are using a food bowl (inanimate object) to hold the resource they covet the most.  And finally, we are not making them work for this resource! In essence, the frustration of only getting 60 seconds of time to eat, in a predetermined place and out of an inanimate object and not having to put in any effort to get the food, leads Fido to believe the bowl and whatever is in it is his property! Now, is it any wonder why Fido growls, snaps or gets grumpy around the food bowl? It is important to recognize that if Fido is behaving this way, you will really want to think twice about using some of the dominance theory you may have seen on TV last week! Hopefully you can see that yelling, slapping, touching or correcting a dog in this situation is probably not going to be effective, might even escalate the behavior and have you leaving this world with a few less fingers than you entered it with!

First off, if you are reading this and are saying "I don't have that problem," that's great! But understand that it's important to make sure you never do! The techniques I am going to share with you in the upcoming posts are for dogs on both ends of the spectrum…those with problems and those without; with the goal of making sure they never have the problem and maybe fixing a few other "unrelated" problems along the way! So, I really recommend starting these ideas with a puppy before the bad habits form, but since this topic is what to do when the problem is already present, let's go ahead and get started and see what we can do about it!

Having a pet is one of the most endearing activities that one can have in a lifetime. Studies have shown that having a pet is a great way to reduce the amount of stress a person experiences. Pets are great listeners, they have the funniest way of making you smile, and they give nothing less than absolute love and loyalty to their owners.

As far as pets go, dogs and cats have always been rated as top favorites. But this time is devoted solely to dogs and proper dog care. The dog has always been known as man's best friend and with good reason. Dogs by nature are social animals with a pack mentality. Naturally, they have a strong bond with their owner whom they consider as the alpha leader in a pack setting. Given the proper dog care and love, they will give you their utmost and unconditional loyalty and affection.

Dog care starts as early as puppy age for some while for those who choose to adopt, the dogs may already be older yet in need of the same loving care. Choosing to take care of a dog entails a lot of responsibility. As a dog owner, it is expected that the puppy will be raised and brought up responsibly and without any thought of abandonment once the novelty wears off. There have already been too many stories of dogs being abandoned by their owners after they lost interest in the activities of dog care.

As early as possible, part of dog care involves teaching the puppy to learn to identify the members of the family and proper house training. Refrain from using harsh methods to train the puppy as this will only serve to instill bad habits that can be difficult to correct when older. Instead, use gentle but firm instructions in teaching and make things constant so as to reinforce good behavior.

Feeding time is also an integral part of dog care. Keep feeding times constant as much as possible. A puppy needs to be fed several times during the day and the frequency decreases as the pup grows older. This will take gradually until the dog is able to adjust accordingly. Make sure that plenty of clean water is always available.

Potty training is also important. Most owners will usually find this aspect of dog care as one of the more difficult. It's true that it requires a lot of patience to teach a dog where to relieve itself but this isn't as difficult as it seems. Proper dog care requires that owners carefully and patiently train the dog to relieve itself in a particular location through plenty of positive reinforcement. With rewards and lots of affection the dog will be able to follow suit.

Spanking is not normally advisable. A dog by instinct will cower at the earliest sign of disapproval from its owner. A firm "No" is enough to show that his behavior is unacceptable. Make it a point to reward good behavior and be firm in correcting undesirable behavior. Through constant repetition, the dog will be able to understand and learn what is acceptable and not.

Dog care is very much similar to raising an infant child. With proper instruction and love, any dog will grow up to become a cherished and loving member of the family. There's just nothing like the bond that a happy dog gives its owner and it is this fact that makes these animals so much fulfilling to be with.
