Great Danes
are known for their large size, these dogs can reach 7 feet in height when standing on their hind legs, and they like nothing better than to jump up on humans and slobber them with doggie kisses! These huge dogs can also reach a weight of 170 pounds. Despite their intimidating stature, they are fondly referred to as "gentle giants" due to their friendly and puppy-like manner. Great Danes love getting and receiving attention, and they make great family dogs.
A well trained
Great Dane
makes a gentle family pet for households with children. These dogs grow rapidly as pups but then experience a slow growth stage, reaching maturity at 3 years of age. They enjoy interacting with their human pack and despite their athletic build don't require as much exercise as you would imagine, a nice romp on the backyard with a daily walk will do just fine for these goliaths. Great Danes love lounging around the house just as much as having a free run of the backyard.
Because of their great size and strength, a well fenced yard is necessary if you are to prevent these dogs from escaping. They are very capable of toppling fences and pushing gates open and special care should be taken to keep them contained. Being short haired dogs they don't do well in extreme weather conditions and need a sheltered area to protect them from the sun as well as the cold.
Ample drinking water should be provided as these dogs can consume quite a large amount of water, so be sure to buy a large water bowl. They also enjoy toys and can get a little overexcited when playing so make sure you remove all your breakables before getting one of these dogs!
Great Danes tend to drool so take this into consideration before getting one, and if you're out of the house for long periods of time you should be aware that they don't like being left alone for long. Leaving a Great Dane alone for long periods of time may result in him developing unwanted behavior such as destructive chewing.
Despite their muscular build, these dogs are quite delicate and you should discourage excessive jumping and strenuous activities. Restrict the dog's exercise to low impact types of activities to avoid injuries.
Although they have gentle natures, Great Danes can discourage potential intruders by the sheer size of their bodies. They also bark and growl menacingly if they sense a stranger in the area which can give even the most persistent intruder second thoughts.
When it comes to grooming,
Great Danes
are very low maintenance due to the fact that they are short haired. A weekly brushing should suffice to keep this giant's coat in shape. On the whole Great Danes make excellent family pets as long as they are well trained and given a lot of attention. If you're considering getting one of these dogs, it's a good idea to research the breed before taking the leap. Try to spend some time with breeders to get an idea what owning what of these dogs entail.
