Before we even start talking about great dane training I want you to know the breed to some extent. They are very smart, love kids, are very affectionate and make great pets. They are not big barkers, they need a lot of exercise are very dependable, reliable and trustworthy. This makes for a great breed to train, you want too at a young age because they get big fast.
A Great Dane I will start training as young as two months old - the younger the better. Socialize him to other places, people and dogs and once he is comfortable with you and his new home, you are ready to start training. Make sure and show him you are the master. He needs to respect you not fear you, this will go along way in your training.
First put his big check chain on the collar and then his leash. Now your ready to start great dane training. Just start walking him if he tries to take the lead turn immediately and snap his leash. This will keep him paying attention. If he tries to walk behind you snap him forward encouraging him. When you stop walking pull straight up on his leash and at the same time push down on his rear with your left hand. When he does this correctly praise him to let him know he did it right. Praise goes a long way in your dogs maturing in obedience. When teaching him the "down" command, say "drop" and immediately snap his leash to the ground while pushing his rear down. In a short period of time he will drop immediately. He will catch onto this fast.
Now to get him to get an object and hold it until you say "give," here is what you do. Put the object in front of his mouth and say "take it" while slowly opening his mouth and placing the object behind his fangs. Only do this for five seconds. Now, holding his mouth shut say "hold." If he tries to get rid of the object, immediately close his mouth and say "hold." Now have him sit by your left side and throw the object out five to ten feet and say "take it." As he grabs the object and is walking to you say "hold" and when he gets to you, push on his rear to make him sit in front of you. What happens is in time you will say "take it" and he will run out, grab the article and hold it and sit in front of you, and only give you the article when you say give. This is just a few things you can do with great dane training. I am sure you and your big buddy will enjoy all there is to learn have fun!

worst written book ever?,
there may be some useful info here, but it’s well hidden among such gems as “Great Dane’s have such large bodies, they need a soft place to lie down”, (who knew?) and “The last thing you want at a party is your Great Dane showing off his bad habits of eating their own feces, it just is not good, and you need to take care of it immediately”.
stating the obvious? not to vince stead! personally, i’d rather spend my time and money on a volume from a reputable publisher on generic dog training. this book may claim to be “breed specific”, but it is so weak that – well, i think i’ve made my point.

|Was this written by a toddler and never reviewed?,
Nothing in this book was helpful, at one point it even referred to a mastiff instead of a Great Dane. The grammar and spelling was so distracting that I quit reading. You’re much better off finding a website about a Great Dane. Worst $3 I’ve ever spent…end of story.

|Priceless Info for Great Dane owners,
As it turns out, Great Danes can be great pets! I was having so much trouble with my Great Dane before reading this book. Every breed is different. I learned the hard way. This book gave me great tips and allowed me to turn a problem pet into a prize pet.
