Separation Anxiety in Your Puppy Or Newly Adopted Dog and How to Overcome It

One of the most common questions I get is how to stop separation anxiety in a puppy or newly adopted adult dog. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that new dogs are trying to figure out the rules of their new household and puppies are probably testing them. Use this opportunity to let the member of your family clearly understand the rules of the house.

When you come home, the first rule is to not get excited and set the dog into a tizzy. This will only make the problem of separation anxiety worse. If you crate your dog while you are gone (which I strongly recommend when you have a puppy or newly adopted dog), then wait a few minutes before letting them out. And NEVER let them out while they are whining, crying, or barking. ALWAYS wait for them to calm down first...no matter how long that takes.

When my Chihuahua was a puppy, he would sometimes whine for 20 minutes when we first got home, so be prepared that this can go on a while. If you stick to your guns, know that they will eventually learn to remain calm when you come home. After understanding the rules, Leon hasn't whined in his playpen since he was six months old.

One of the first things I ask people when they mention separation anxiety is to tell me how much exercise their dog is getting in a day. I always say that a tired dog, is a good dog. Keeping the dog tired is one of the easiest ways to stop separation anxiety, because they will just want to sleep while you are gone-which is actually the whole idea. You want your dog to relax and chill out while you are away, not work himself up into an anxiety filled ball of energy.

Make sure your dog is getting all the exercise it needs. Take the dog for frequent walks. Use the treadmill. Use your bicycle if you need the dog to run. And consider a doggy day care. My little Chihuahua went to doggy day care starting at seven months to eliminate his fear of unfamiliar dogs; but it had an added benefit of keeping him tired the rest of the week while I was a work. Even though I walked him every day for ½ hour, that little 5 pound dog had enough energy to destroy his bed in his playpen. After just ONE day of doggy daycare per week, he never overturned his bed again. That was $ 12/week well spent!

Follow these two simple rules, and most separation anxiety cases will go away in a couple of weeks. If they continue to cry and whine and destroy your house, then the next step is to call in a dog behaviorist who can address the situation further.

Pit bull Puppies

Pit bull refers to a group of dog breeds that are derived from the molosser family. Pit bull puppies have square heads and broad cheek. The cheek is broad because it houses a powerful jaw. It is always eager to please the master. It is highly protective of its territory or the house of the owner. It is willing to fight until death for its owner. Though it has a friendly nature, it is not suitable as a pet for everyone. It can be fierce and aggressive towards strangers. If you want to raise a pit bull, you must have an understanding of how to raise and treat it. If you don't understand the psychology of the dog, the dog will end up to be boss over you.

Pit bull puppies are quite active when they are in indoors.

It will be happier if it is given more space to move around. You can raise a pit bull in an apartment as long as there are sufficient rooms.

The height of the pit bull puppy ranges from 18 – 22 inches while the weight is about 22 – 110 pounds.  Pit bull is generally healthy and won't contract with illness easily. There are reports from owners that the pit bull dog can suffer from hip dysplasia, cataracts and congenital heart disease.

Pit bull puppies need to a lot of exercises daily. You can let the puppy exercise by taking it for a stroll in the park. The life expectancy of the puppy is approximately 12 years. The average litter size is approximately five to ten puppies.

Pit bull puppies are covered with a smooth short haired coat.

Though it has a short hair coat, you still have to groom it regularly with a bristle brush. When grooming the dog, you have to bathe and shampoo it. After shampooing the puppy, you must rub it with a dry towel so that the coat will gleam. The pit bull is an average shedder.

Pit bull puppies can be adopted from the pit bull kennel. Before adopting a puppy, make sure you check with the insurance company. Some insurance companies do not allow the policy holder to keep a pit bull. The reason that many insurance companies don't allow homeowners to keep pit bulls is because they have a tendency to hurt people. Some cities in the United States prohibit the homeowners from owning pit bull puppies. It is your responsibility to check with the local department to find out if you are allowed to raise pit bull puppies. If you don't want to adopt it from the kennel, you can purchase it from a breeder. Despite that, it is best that you adopt it from the kennel. The puppy from the kennel is trained so you don't have to spend time to train it anymore. Most of the puppies from the stores are not trained and won't listen to your command. Hence, it is recommended that you buy the pit bull puppy from a kennel.

Buying a puppy

Buying a Puppy

Choosing a puppy is an important decision that should not be taken lightly.  Buying a puppy is a commitment of at least 10-15 years, and you should not take that decision lightly.  Dog’s can bring companionship and joy into your home, but only if you are able and ready to take on the responsibility of being a dog owner.

Once you’ve determined that you can make a commitment to a puppy and you are sure you have the time and ability to properly care for it, you must decide what breed of dog to get.  Whether you want a purebred or a cross breed, make sure to do your research ahead of time to find the perfect type of dog for your family.  Small toy dogs look cute and don’t take up a lot of space, but they can easily be hurt by small children.  Large dogs can be dangerous to have around children.  Even if they have a calm temperament, their size alone can pose a hazard.

When you’ve determined what type of dog you would like, the next step is finding the perfect puppy for your family.  You can find puppies at pet stores, through breeders, or even online.  While buying a puppy from someone you know personally is always the best way to go, not everyone knows a breeder who specializes in the type of dog they want.  Ask around and get recommendations from friends and family to help locate a breeder near you.

If nobody knows of any local breeders, you can look online.  Be sure to ask the breeder plenty of questions about the health of the parents and whether or not they are on site.  You will want to go visit the puppy at least once before making a purchase.  Dog breeders that require you to purchase a puppy before it is born or before you see it are not reputable.  They should at least offer you the opportunity to view and interact with the puppy before making a decision or putting down money.  If at any point you feel uncomfortable with the breeder, you should look elsewhere for your new addition.

If you would rather adopt a dog from the pound, you can simply stop in during business hours.  It’s a good idea to bring your entire family with you when selecting a dog and give each family member the opportunity to interact with the animal before you decide to take it home.  Whether you’re adopting a puppy or a grown dog, you should ask the shelter workers if they have any information on the animals background.

Once you purchase your new puppy, from either a breeder or a shelter, you will need to make arrangements to have it visit a veterinarian.  The vet will take the dogs weight and advise you of any vaccinations or special care instructions.  You can also get valuable information about potty training your new puppy and socializing it.  Your puppy’s first vet appointment is important for establishing a lifetime of healthy habits.

If your town requires you to license your new puppy, you’ll want to do that as soon as possible.  Some places only require adult dogs to be licensed, while other towns also prefer puppies to be accounted for.  Licensing your dog is important in the event the dog gets lost.  If your dog runs away or is lost and winds up at animal control, they will be able to reunite you with your puppy if they have a record of its ownership.  Microchips that can be embedded under the neck skin of your new puppy will also help him get safely back to you if he accidentally becomes lost.

Buying a puppy is an important decision that you should not take lightly.  Dog ownership is a commitment for the lifetime of the animal, and you should choose a puppy that will fit in seamlessly with your family.  If you choose carefully, you will have a friend for life!

Adopting a pet from shelter

I found Bishakha a male dog in Vishakapattanam, Andhra Pradesh way back 2005. Please do not laugh at me hearing such a name of a male dog. My crazy only son Souhardya named it. The hotel boy brought such a cute dog from his shelter. It was tiny, fluffy-haired milk-while puppy and was lying curled within the hands of Ramesh. Ramesh confessed that he was unable to maintain the dog because of his low income and the only option he had left to leave it on the road. Finally, I had to agree to adopt the puppy.

My son named him as Bishaka as we found it in Vishakapattanam. Soon he was occupied by my son as his own property. Matter of fact I saw the next day onwards he became a shadow of my son. He used to wait for my son to come back from his school on the balcony at least from one hour back seeing towards the road.

I often thought how that small creature had such a timing sense. Last year in January, my son came from the school with a very high fever and we found he had red spots all over his face body. The doctor said it was measles only and nothing to be worried. I can remember the whole night when we were monitoring his high fever and pouring water on his head to reduce the temperature. I was surprised to see Bishakha was always sitting just beside the head of my son.

Afterwards everything was smooth and we were also very happy to find someone in our family. Suddenly, it was 6 July 2008 night when Bishakha was felling very uneasy. I immediately tried to understand Bishakha’s problem but I was helpless. I called the doctor when his cell phone was switched off. My son started crying.

At 4.45 in the morning, I went to the doctor’s home. When we turned back everything was end. My son with my wife took Bishaka in their lap were trying to understand the problem. The doctor examined, came out and told me that Bishaka was no more. It was a surprising shock to me. I was just unable to comprehend how I could make my son to understand the issue. I am unable to describe the next moments and days. If you come to my house, you will find a big photo of Bishaka along with my son. My son used to kiss it before going to school and talk to it. To be frank my wife and I also kiss Bishaka sometimes in absence of each other and my son.
